Domi(nation).
So I had this interesting conversation with Mere the other night.. and it was basically about racism, equality, social and political awareness and infastructure.. and there was one particular thing we discussed that really hit home i suppose.
The way we currently and have for the past 150 years dealt with first nations people.
To think that we live in a society where we have such convienances as never ending hot water, supermarkets stocked with foods from around the world, electric stoves air conditioning….the list goes on. So many rediculous convienances that go unnoticed and over looked, to see that and to want to help manage major conflicts in other countries and yet we cannot manage our own problems… behind closed doors the sound is deafening. we have reserves that are in subpar living conditions… schools that seem to be shutdown routinely for months at a time.. a healthcare system that sustains our cities but does not reach even the shadows of the lands they have been placed on.. desolation, isolation.. institutionalized. its what has become of some of these native reserves.. Now I understand that they have asked to be left alone on their lands but they still need infrastructure.. social programs and public awareness.. I believe there are alot of people on these reserves that throw there lives away becuase theres nothing for them to live for.. now this isnt always the case but this article really got me thinking.. it made me think why cant us so called socially democratic peace keeping canadians take care of our own people the way we show compassion and empathy in other countries. Are we that far gone.. is our conscienceous objection approach nothing but a way of retaining our neutral status while watching the insides of our national pride be burnt to the ground.
I think its time to address these issues. I think the way we have been dealing with our people for the last 150 years is not right, unjust and inhumane… I feel that change is in vain if a business suit soldier handing out contracts thinks throwing millions of dollars at people to ease the suffering they have had for hundreds of years will positively effect these reserves and these first nations. If there is no social infrastructure to support the needs and wants of our people how can we expected to thrive and sustain an adequate quality of life.
Just a thought.
